INFINITE UPSIDE

The title on the chart does not explain everything

Books about how power works inside organizations

Reading for understanding influence inside an organization, including the power an owner already exercises.

The person with the most senior title is not always the person who makes a proposal possible. A colleague may hold a relationship, a piece of information or support that the chart barely acknowledges. Meanwhile, an owner may underestimate how strongly an ordinary reply shapes what other people are willing to do.

Our first recommendation is Infinite Upside for that last question: what does your existing authority teach the company? Jeffrey Pfeffer's Power turns toward acquiring influence. Julie Battilana and Tiziana Casciaro's Power, for All offers a wider account of power in relationships. Start with the position whose power you need to understand.

  1. Infinite Upside: examining the influence you already have

    By Vijay Sheth.

Chapter 10 of Infinite Upside: Building Wealth With Room to Live notices what happens when an owner repeatedly takes over after receiving an update. People can learn to wait for intervention. A harsh response to unwelcome information can also change which information reaches the owner.

That is a useful opening to power reading because it makes influence observable in ordinary work. A stated wish for initiative can coexist with responses that discourage it. The owner needs to examine more than the words used to describe the company's culture.

Consider a fictional founder who says any manager can challenge a proposal. At each meeting, she interrupts the first objection and praises the person who restores agreement. No written rule prohibits disagreement. The pattern still gives people a reason to choose their contributions carefully.

Read the memoir first if you want the power question to begin with your own conduct. It connects authority with responsibility for the conditions other people encounter. It does not supply a theory of organizational politics or a program for advancing a career.

  2. Power: investigating the acquisition of influence

    By Jeffrey Pfeffer.

In his official overview of Power: Why Some People Have It and Others Don't, Pfeffer examines how people obtain influence, with attention to careers, relationships, reputation and resources.

This is the more directly career-oriented choice here. It is relevant when doing good work has not explained why certain people gain the ability to shape decisions. You want to investigate how influence is acquired, rather than assume that formal performance and actual influence always move together.

For an owner, that perspective can also reveal a mismatch in how employees' situations are understood. Someone trying to get a project considered may face a different set of obstacles from the founder who can put it on the agenda.

Read the argument without turning an explanation of influence into permission for any conduct that succeeds. Effective maneuvering and a defensible decision remain different judgments. The book's stated scope gives you a subject to examine; it does not establish why a particular colleague advanced.

  3. Power, for All: looking at the relationship around influence

By Julie Battilana and Tiziana Casciaro.

The publisher's description of Power, for All: How It Really Works and Why It's Everyone's Business connects influence with access to resources others value. It also addresses changing established power relationships.

Choose this wider perspective when the question is not simply how you personally advance. You may want to understand why someone with a title has limited practical influence, or how people outside the most senior roles can participate in change.

Imagine a different fictional company where a project leader has permission to launch a service but cannot obtain the specialist time it requires. The approved project still lacks the specialist time needed to proceed. A relational account gives the reader another way to investigate that situation.

The scope overlaps with Pfeffer's interest in influence. The distinction is the emphasis you want first: individual acquisition of organizational power or a broader account of its distribution and use. Neither book can identify the crucial relationship in a company it has not examined.

Read from the position you occupy

If you already hold authority, begin with what your responses make possible or difficult. If you lack influence, investigate the relationships around the decision you want to affect. Those can be different reading needs inside the same organization.

The values-and-speaking-up selection addresses acting on a concern. The shareholder-rights example concerns an agreed approval arrangement. Each explains part of organizational life without explaining all of its power.

Read Infinite Upside for the owner's responsibility within that picture. Try the opening passage before following its later management chapters.
