This is an invented discussion case. Your job is to produce two things another person could use: a reply to a prospective participant and a short internal decision note. Work only from the packet below. You can choose not to expand the offer; you cannot fill a missing fact with the arrangement you hope will happen.
Use the case after reading Chapters 3, 10 and 15 of Infinite Upside: Building Wealth With Room to Live. It brings together the operation behind a promise, a handoff someone can complete and a narrower offer that works on its own.
The Friday packet
Lea organizes a bookbinding workshop. Twelve participants have paid for an introductory session on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. No advanced session has been sold. All people, arrangements and figures in this packet are fictional.
- The existing session
The room is confirmed from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and holds twenty participants. Lea and the facilitator are available throughout that period. The confirmed room and facilitator arrangements cover up to twenty introductory participants at the same agreed charges. Setup takes twenty minutes; cleanup takes thirty. Twelve complete introductory kits are already in hand.
- The interest
Eight people have asked about an advanced format. None has paid or accepted an introductory place. One needs an answer by Friday at 12:30 p.m. before deciding whether to travel.
- The additional resource
The advanced format requires a cutting machine and a separate qualified operator. The introductory facilitator cannot operate it. Casey has said a machine might be available; no operator is confirmed.
- The kits and money
A supplier has confirmed eight additional introductory kits for $120 as one batch, held until 4 p.m. Friday. Payment by then secures collection at 5 p.m. Lea can make that collection. She has $160 available for optional expansion after the existing session is funded. The kits do not supply an advanced format.
At 11:30 a.m., Casey confirms the machine can be collected at 5:30 p.m. Friday, but says he cannot attend on Saturday. Nobody else has agreed to operate it. The machine's collection arrangements and any operator cost remain unresolved.
Make two outputs before reading on
First, write Lea's reply to the person who needs an answer by 12:30. State what can be confirmed now and what cannot. Give the person something usable for their travel decision rather than a cheerful promise that details will follow.
Second, write an internal note for the next decision before the kit offer expires at 4 p.m. Name the offer being considered, the resource still missing, the money available and who carries the next action. Keep the twelve paid places separate from the eight inquiries.
Test this proposed announcement against the packet:
Advanced places are available for Saturday. We have twelve participants booked, eight more interested and a machine ready to collect. Book now and we will send the remaining details later.
Which statements are supported? Which move from an inquiry or available item to a promise the packet cannot yet support? Revise your two outputs before comparing them with the possible response below.
One possible response
There is no requirement to pursue the largest offer. This possible reply keeps the existing session clear while leaving the caller free to choose:
The advanced session is not confirmed. A machine is available to collect, but we do not have a confirmed person to operate it on Saturday. I cannot offer you an advanced booking on that basis. The introductory session is running from 10 to noon. An additional place is not confirmed yet. I will check the extra kits and update you by 12:15, before your 12:30 decision. Please wait for confirmation of a place before making the trip.
The reply does not turn the caller into an introductory booking. Lea has accepted a 12:15 update, not promised a place. If the kit arrangement is still unconfirmed then, the update must say so while the caller can still make the 12:30 decision. A promise to update at 4 p.m. would miss that choice.
The internal note could contain the following:
- Keep the existing promise. Twelve paid introductory places have the room, facilitator and kits confirmed. Setup from 9:30 to 9:50 and cleanup from noon to 12:30 fit the supplied access.
- Keep the advanced option unconfirmed. Machine availability has improved one fact. It has not supplied the operator, collection arrangements or the cost of the complete advanced offer.
- Decide on the extra kits before 4 p.m. Lea can spend $120 of the separate $160 and collect the batch at 5 p.m., leaving $40. She can instead leave the batch unordered. Buying it would support up to eight extra introductory places, not eight advanced bookings.
- Confirm each actual next step. Lea carries the 12:15 update, the caller's response and any kit order. No introductory place is confirmed merely because somebody asked about the advanced format.
A decision to buy the kits before knowing all demand would be a choice to carry that stock and its $120 cost. A decision not to expand could also preserve a complete introductory session. The packet does not supply ticket prices or future kit uses that would settle the commercial choice.
Read back the promise after the decision
If Lea orders the kits, check that the supplier accepted payment and the batch was collected. The facilitator needs the actual number of introductory participants, not the sum of paid places and unrelated inquiries. The public description needs the format that can really be delivered.
If Lea leaves the batch unordered, the original twelve places still have their stated resources. The eight people who asked about the advanced format have not booked the introductory one. Any later advanced offer needs its own completed arrangement.
Compare the outputs with a partner. Could the caller make the travel decision? Could another organizer see what Lea had decided and what remained open? Return to the relevant chapters with the point where your first answer became more certain than the packet allowed.
